Philosophy of Sports
The following four goals reflect the philosophy of the sports program at Ad Fontes Academy. They have been extrapolated from the notes of Mr. Paul Berghaus a former coach and Bible teacher at Ad Fontes Academy during the 2001-2002 academic year.
1) To do all things to the glory of God. We are commanded to do this and certainly sports is a "thing" within the scope of this command. We may win every game, and yet if we have done so in a way that dishonors our Lord, have we really been successful?
"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" 1 Cor. 10:31.
2) To develop teamwork and leadership. We are exhorted in the Bible to serve one another, to think of others before thinking of ourselves. This is the essence of teamwork, that as we learn to work together on the sports field, we will learn to work together as Christians in the building of God's kingdom. There will be opportunities for students to serve in leadership roles and thus develop the skills needed to, Lord willing, lead their families, churches or to lead others in their vocation.
"Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well-being" 1 Cor. 10:24.
3) To buffet our bodies. We could also use the word discipline or train. God would have us care for the bodies He has given us.
4) To play to win. We do want to win games. God calls us to excellence in every pursuit. Our Lord Jesus did all things superbly, and we should follow His example. We will practice hard and play well. At the same time, we will trust God for the outcome of our games. So, no matter what the score is, we can be assured that we will be more than conquerors in all things because of Christ. This is what God's Word tells us.
"Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it" 1 Cor. 9:24.
These goals reflect the mission of Ad Fontes and our hopes for a well rounded Ad Fontes graduate
